On January 26th, 2010 a B-Boy battle was held at the cultural hall in Vientiane, Laos, if you missed the battle, you could catch it on the Lao Star channel. The event was coordinated by the organization Fang Mae Khong (listen to the Mekong River).
To find about more about them you can check out their website: http://www.fmkfestival.com.
The B-Boy battle had 16 crews entered to dance off with each other. These 16 crews came from Laos, Thai, Australia, Myanmar, Cambodia, and France. Two of the dance crews that we know of are the famous crew in Laos, Lao Bang Fai, and the “Falang Crew” (French Crew) but known as Dance City in France. The types of dances that were exhibited were various, ranging from popping to krumping. It wasn’t only a show for dancing, there were also performances from Pull-T Club and L.O.G., and if anyone was looking carefully, there were a couples of Lao Artists just standing by, like Sam and Lady.
The Fang Mae Khong 7 Days of Dance is the first international dance show to be held in Laos. The festival allows the crews to share their experiences, compare their challenges, and communicate using an art that doesn’t know any borders. It is a great opportunity for Lao artists to show their talent to the world and to learn from their colleagues. This festival will be a unique laboratory where traditional, contemporary and hip-hop dance will be mixed and combined by choreographers and dancers inspiration and soul. They will have the chance to share and show their talents thanks to the Fang Mae Khong Dance Festival, which is intended to be held annually in Laos. It was launched by Lao Bang Fai dance group and the French company A’Corps.
The ACVientiane volunteers, Keng, Linda, and I, Kristi, were backstage catching all the action. We got to experience fully the excitement in the atmosphere around us. Many of the dancers were feeling excited and also anxious, but all of them shared one trait in common, they were all so confident. Confident that they were going to win, confident that they were the best, and damn, I have to admit, they all were awesome. The dancers weren’t the only ones we got to talk to, we also got to talk to Pull-T Club whose performance was great. They wanted “everyone to get pleasure from their music and dance and have fun” which the audience did, including the ACVientiane volunteers. J
